STEP Student Announcements: Oct 10 – Oct 14

We have the following important announcements for this week:

1. Workshop: “Maximize Your Library Research” with Lora Largo (SMCC Librarian). This workshop will be held on Tuesday, October 11th at 12:15pm in the TRIO STEP office (SU Room 105). Great workshop if you need assistance with your research papers!


2. Workshop: “How to Apply to Northern Arizona University” with Frank Pina (NAU Representative). Frank will be here to answer all your questions about the NAU application process. This workshop will be held on Wednesday, October 12th at 12:15pm in the TRIO STEP office (SU Room 105)

3. We still have seats available for students to attend the TRIO University of Arizona transfer day tour on Friday, October 14th. Transportation and lunch will be covered by the TRIO STEP program. Students will have the opportunity to tour campus and learn about the U of A transfer process. Seating is limited so please stop by the office to complete field trip paperwork to secure your spot. On Friday please meet us in the TRIO STEP office no later than 7:45am. We will be leaving at 8:00am SHARP! We should return to South Mountain before 5:00pm.

4. Free tickets (for STEP students only) to attend the annual SMCC Men’s Luncheon “Once You Choose…Anything’s Possible.” The luncheon will be held on Thursday, October 20th 11:30 to 1:00pm in the Student Union Room 100. If you are interested in attending the luncheon please stop by the STEP office to reserve your spot. Women are welcome to attend.

5. Spring 2012 registration now underway! Beat the rush and register early! http://my.maricopa.edu

6. English and Math Tutoring: If you need math tutoring Jesus Bustamante will be available Monday – Thursday from 9:00am to 1:00pm. If you need English tutoring Priscilla Benbrook will be available Monday-Thursday from 9:00am to 1:00pm and Margarita Arnold will be available Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and Wednesdays from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Our English tutors can also review personal statements and resumes! All tutoring will be held in the TRIO STEP conference room.

7. Please go online to complete the Financial Literacy 101 on-line money management course. TRIO has paid for each student to be able to take this course at no charge. The website is www.financialliteracy101.org. Once you get to the website, the Access Code for new students is SMCCSSS. Completing this course is required for all students to remain in good standing with the STEP Program and should take you less than 45 minutes. Please note, you will need to be able to hear audio content to complete the course. Once you complete the course, you can turn in your certificate of completion to receive a free 2 GB flash drive from STEP. If you have not already done so, please complete this course ASAP. Remember, you only have to complete the course 1 time.

8. Have you met with Laura (STEP academic advisor) to update your check sheet? If not, please make an appointment to meet with her by calling 602.305.5676 or stop by the TRIO STEP office. Laura is now available on Wednesdays from 10:30a.m. to 7:00p.m. Remember, you must meet with Laura at least once a semester to remain in good standing with the STEP Program.

9. We are still in the process of hiring new a STEP program coordinator. Please be patient as we a working with a limited staff.





10. If you know someone who has turned in an application for the STEP program, please let them know that we are continuing to review applications and schedule orientations. Please be patient as we are working with a limited staff.
