Hello STEP Students,
We hope that you are enjoying these first few weeks of the semester. We have a few announcements this week:
- We are offering the “How to Succeed in College” workshop this week on Tuesday September 15 from 12:15 -1:15 p.m. in the STEP Office. Please stop by and learn some valuable tips about a variety of approaches to student and personal success. This workshop counts as 1 Academic Unit toward GRANT AID.
- We still have spots available for our first cultural opportunity of the semester: Legally Blonde on September 24. We will leave South Mountain at 4:45 p.m. and return around 10:30 p.m. This is a free opportunity! STEP provides the cost of the ticket, dinner, and transportation. Don’t miss out! Stop by the STEP office to fill out field trip paperwork to secure your spot. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. This performance counts as 1 Personal Development Unit toward GRANT AID.
- We received the following announcement from Student Life: Attention interested volunteers: Help feed the homeless! The Student Life and Leadership Department would like to extend the following volunteer opportunity to all club officers and members. The Andre House assists hundreds of people each day. Since its founding in 1984, this ministry has inspired a number of services and programs. Because André House is interested in the well-being of the individual as well as the surrounding neighborhood, the range of services reflects this community-focused mission. On the dates below 30 volunteers are needed to assist in preparing and serving food, washing dishes, cleaning, sorting donations. The meals are open to anyone and the Andre House provides 500 to 600 plates during the evening six nights a week. For those of you who are interested in volunteering you may contact the Student Life and Leadership Department or just stop by we are located in the Student Union Building Room 111. If you choose to volunteer for the Andre House, please be prepared to leave SMCC by 2:30pm on the scheduled dates below. The Student Life & Leadership staff will provide all transportation. Note: Four volunteers per scheduled date. The Fall 2009 dates are included below. This volunteer opportunity counts as 1 Personal Development Unit toward GRANT AID.

- Grant Aid applications are now available! Grant Aid is additional funding available for STEP students who are currently receiving a Pell Grant. You MUST be receiving a Pell Grant to be eligible to apply. There are several requirements to complete the application and the process is competitive. The more active you are in STEP, the more likely you are to receive funding. Stop by the office to pick up an application or see our blog http://stepsmcc.blogspot.com for more information.
- Did you know that if you are planning on transferring in the Spring or Fall 2010, now is the time to start preparing? You need to request transcripts, complete your application, look for scholarships, supply immunization records, and complete several steps to make your transfer process seamless and successful. STEP can help you every “step” of the way. Stop by or call to make an appointment to meet with our advisor Laura to get your transfer checklist and make sure you are on track to meet all deadlines. When it comes to transferring, preparation is the key to success!
